$130m for Saatchi?

Extrapolating from that WSJ article, this author says that Saatchi is bringing in $130m, but those were one week figures and from a small survey sample.

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/562e4b94-7787-11dc-9de8-0000779fd2ac.html?nclick_check=1

Saatchi's numbers seemed to cause quite a stir... wish they were a little more precise though.

October 12, 2007

Results in from Saatchi Gallery

Some good figures from a WSJ article about Saatchi Gallery. Seems that artists are doing pretty well selling their work on the site. Some quick stats:
* 65K artists signed up
* 41% have sales of 30K a week. How can this be? They say "combined weekly sales" is that per artist or the aggregation of all artists?
* they report 50 million "hits" a day  - which tells me that they're incredibly un-web savvy if they're still thinking in terms of hits. The WSJ reporter looked up their Media Metrix rankings which showed 894K unique visitors in august.

Art Market Research

I paid UClue.com to do this research for me. They did a fantastic job. I'm going to go through it with a fine toothed comb sometime soon to start sorting it into a more useful format.

Let's start with this caveat from ArtBusiness.com

"DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL ART MARKET SALES STATISTICS":
http://www.artbusiness.com/marketdata.html

"Q: Could you please point me in the direction of both nationwide (United
States) and worldwide or international statistics on the art market . . .

"A: A surprising number of people search for answers to these and similar
questions in attempts to quantify the art market. The art market, however,
is not quantifiable, and the answers to these questions don't exist. To
begin with, art is not a commodity that can be regulated . . . ."

Fortunately, I did find some statistics. However, you will have to pay for
a report, or several reports, to obtain some of the information you want.
But I'm not sure all the information you want is available, whether via
free or paid resources.

OFFLINE AUCTIONS

Art Price's "Art Market Trends 2006" is available for free online.

http://web.artprice.com/ami/AMI.aspx?id=MjEwODg4NDY3MDAyOTk=

At that page, you can download market reports for the years 2002 - 2006.

Here's the 2006 report in PDF:
http://img1.artprice.com/pdf/trends2006.pdf
(You may have to copy & paste this link.)

"In 2006 no less than 810 works sold for over a million dollars,
generating total auction revenue of $ 2.7 billion . . .

". . .In total, the global public auction Fine Art market generated a
total revenue of $ 6.4 billion which represents double the amounts
regularly posted during the 1999 - 2003 period and an increase of 52%
compared with 2005."

ArtNews ARTnewsletter Highlights, July, 10 2007, has auction figures from
London for this year to date:

"Auctions Nearly Double Last Year’s Totals":
http://www.artnewsonline.com/artnewsletter/default.asp#news2

Hislop's Art Sales Index has a breakout of live auction sales for
2003-2004:
http://www.art-sales-index.com/pages/Graphs___Charts/graphs___charts.html

As of 2001, these were the top auction houses, worldwide:
http://www.art-sales-index.com/pages/Products/asi33-auct.html

You may be interested in subscribing to Art Sales Index for more current
information.

CURRENT TOP AUCTION HOUSES

Christie's is Number 1. See this January 11, 2007, press release:
http://www.christies.com/presscenter/pdf/01112007/142041.pdf

Sotheby's is Number 2, according to this January 2007 article from the
International Herald, "How Christie's kept top spot over Sotheby's in 2006
sales," by Souren Melikian
http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/01/12/opinion/melik13.php

"Sotheby's slipped behind Christie's for the second year running in the
battle for world supremacy that is pitching the two world auction giants
against each other. In 2006, Christie's sold $4.33 billion worth of art at
auction, according to a press release issued this week. Sotheby's 2006
sales total posted on its Web site stood more modestly at $3.66 billion."

Bonhams is third, according to this press release: "Bonhams is the third
largest and fastest growing auction house in the world with a global
network of offices and regional representatives providing sales advice and
valuation services in 20 countries."
http://www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.sh/pubweb/publicSite.r?sContinent=EUR&screen=HeadlineDetails&iHeadlineNo=2065

ONLINE SALES/AUCTIONS

Most of the data I found is quite old. It's very difficult to find current
sales data for online art sellers. Some auction sites are privately held,
so not required to release revenue and other financial figures.

According to Artnet's year-end report for 2000:
http://www.artnet.com/about/pr-20000128a.asp?A=8

"Artnet First to Demonstrate Success of Online Art Auctions and Sales

"New York/Frankfurt--artnet, the Internet portal to the world of art,
today released its year-end review. In the past year, artnet has broken new
ground in the art world, pioneering a new lucrative online art market.

"$2 Million Worth of Artworks Sell in Online Auctions."

You'll see that photography led sales.

In 2001, Artnet partnered with eBay for online Art auctions:
http://www.artnet.com/about/pr-2001319-3.asp

Arts Journal has a roundup of reports containing statistics on online
sales from 2000 and 2001:
http://www.artsjournal.com/issues/sellingartonline.htm

From the November 28, 2000 issue of Business Week, "There's Sunlight
Dappling through the Murky Art Market":
http://www.businessweek.com/ebiz/0011/eo1128.htm

"But if the art world really wants to gain large exposure and become
widely accessible, the only solution is the Internet. Today, only 2% of
international art sales, valued by the EC at $7 billion, are actually well
known -- and that's because those took place in public auctions."

For a general overview, see the 2004 Art Business News article "Web sites
bid for art buyers: despite setbacks, online art auctions are on the verge
of coming into their own":
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0HMU/is_3_31/ai_114474038/pg_1

Also see this July 29, 2005, Business Week article, "Art on the Net: The
Second Wave," by Michelle Dammon Loyalka
http://www.businessweek.com/smallbiz/content/jul2005/sb20050729_479773.htm

You'll see that most art that sells online is low to medium priced:

" . . .even on eBay, art sales are starting to take off. Each day the
online-auction site sells more than 920 pieces in the "Affordable Art"
section, which is just one of the eBay's 12 art categories. Sales in the
"Self-Representing Artists" section increased 67% from 2003 to 2004, with
460 pieces now sold daily. . . " [I could not find sales figures for art on
eBay, not even in its most recent quarterly earnings report.]

"For the most part, that means selling lower-priced work . . . the
best-selling art on BoundlessGallery is under $500, and Guild's sweet spot
is between $500 and $2,500. . .."

Elise Bauer, a consultant to technology companies, posted this examination
of art sales on eBay in 2003:
http://www.elise.com/web/a/online_art_sales.php

But for contemporary figures for online auctions, and other subtopics,
such as posters and prints, you'll have to turn to paid resources:

REPORTS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE

Gordon's Art
http://www.gordonsart.com/

These Gordon's items are of particular interest:

Hislop’s Art Sales Index "providing international auction results for
Fine Art, including: Oil paintings, works on paper, drawings, miniatures,
prints and photographs (above $3000), and sculptures."

"The Gordon’s Print Price Annual is the leading provider of
international auction results for Prints, Posters, Illustrated Books, and
Picasso Ceramics."

"The Gordon’s Photography Price Annual is the industry leader in
providing international auction results for Photographs."

I e-mailed Gordon's. They provide coverage of houses that conduct both
live and online auctions. You may wish to speak with them directly about
which of their publications is best for your needs:

Here's contact information for Gordon's:

Publishes a number of reviews and reports, including "Auction Review."

I contacted them. They provide coverage of Saffronart (India) Online
Auctions:
http://www.saffronart.com/

Here's a March 2006 article about Saffronart, "Online art auction takes
off in India," from physorg:
http://www.physorg.com/news63040708.html

"To get an idea of how Indian art market has swelled over the years,
market sources say that the size for modern and contemporary Indian art
dedicated auction house market, which was just $5 million in 2003, grew to
$13 million 2004, and touched $51 million in 2005."

The only free information I found on frames is for digital frames. See
this March 29, 2007 article at Consumer Electronics Daily News
http://www.cedailynews.com/2007/03/digital_photo_f.html

"A new report from Parks Associates takes a look at the growing market
penetration of digital photo frames, and includes the staggering statistic
that about 1.7 million digital photo frames were sold in the U.S. in
2006--a year-over-year growth rate of more than 400 percent."

And this press release from NPD Group, released May 29, 2007, " According
to leading consumer and retail information provider The NPD Group’s
weekly point-of sale data*, digital picture frames grossed nearly $12
million for the week ending May 12, 2007, selling more than 112 thousand
units . . ."

ART ACCESSORIES/SUPPLIES/EQUIPMENT

The only data I found is this report from MarketResearch.com:
"The U.S. Market for Writing Instruments & Art Supplies
Business Trend Analysts Inc. August 1, 2003," priced at $1,695:

MOST POPULAR ONLINE AUCTION SITES

According to "Essential Information":
"Sotheby's took a historic step when it became the first international art
auction house to hold auctions on the Internet. Since launch, Sothebys.com
has been the platform for record-setting Internet sales, and remains the
Internet's premier auction site for high-end art, antiques, jewelry and
collectibles."

According to Alexa, these are the most visited auction houses online:

DIGITAL ART

"Art Market Trends 2006":
http://img1.artprice.com/pdf/trends2006.pdf

See the pie chart on page 4: photography accounted for 2.2% of art sales;
"other media," 0.5%.

"2005 Digital Fine Art Market Study," compiled by CAP
(http://www.capv.com/public/home.html)

http://www.capv.com/eprise/main/Store/pdf/DigiFineArt05.pdf?ObjectID=65960&ViewMode=0&PreviewState=0

On page 3 of the report see "Market Size. InfoTrends/CAP Ventures expects
the retail value of digitally printed fine art to grow from $430 million in
2004 to over $830 million in 2009, representing a CAGR of 18.1% over the
forecast period."

Unfortunately, there isn't a break-out for online sales.

For more information on the Digital market, see this 2003 report from
Digital Output, "Digital Fine Art - A Mainstream Application?
http://www.digitaloutput.net/content/ContentCT.asp?P=429

"Editor's Note: The responses to this survey were from the segment of
Digital Output's readership that produce fine art projects. All subsequent
percentages cited are from that segment of the readership and do not
reflect Digital Output's entire reader base. . .

"Size of Company
The majority of companies that are producing digital fine art today are
small companies; 88 percent have annual sales of less than $5 million. The
vast majority have fewer than 10 employees. . ."

PHOTO PRINTING, including T-SHIRTS

"Brisk sales aid photo printing market," by Ben Dobbin, AP Business
Writer, posted March 7, 2007, at Boston.com:
http://www.boston.com/ae/theater_arts/articles/2007/03/07/brisk_sales_aid_photo_printing_market/

"U.S. sales in the specialty market -- counting online and retail --
jumped 50 percent to an estimated $694 million in 2006 from $461 million in
2005 and could reach $951 million this year and $1.2 billion in 2008,
according to Photo Marketing Association International . . ." But those
figures include numerous items, not just T-shirts.

The only report I can find with a breakout just for apparel (including
T-shirts) is this $599 report from MarketResearch.com:
http://www.marketresearch.com/product/display.asp?productid=1365600&xs=r

One example: Threadless.com earned $1.6 million in revenue for 2005,
according to Wired:
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.06/play.html?pg=3

In 2006, Wired reported that Threadless expected to jump to $20 million in
revenues:
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.06/look.html

POSTERS & PRINTS

See the previously mentioned information for Gordon's Art:
http://www.gordonsart.com/

Hislop’s Art Sales Index "providing international auction results for
Fine Art, including: Oil paintings, works on paper, drawings, miniatures,
prints and photographs (above $3000), and sculptures."

"The Gordon’s Print Price Annual is the leading provider of
international auction results for Prints, Posters, Illustrated Books, and
Picasso Ceramics."

AllPosters.com earned about $80 million in revenue (posters, prints,
T-shirts, combined) in 2005, according to this article from the East Bay
BizJournal:
http://eastbay.bizjournals.com/eastbay/stories/2005/05/16/story8.html?jst=cn_cn_lk

ART COMMUNITY SITES:

According to Alexa, Deviant Art:
http://www.deviantart.com/
is the most visited community art site, and stands at # 86 in Web traffic
ratings:
http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/top_sites?ts_mode=global&lang=none
This is the only art community site I found in Alexa's Top 500.

According to Technorati,

I heard back from Art Market Research (AMR):
http://www.artmarketresearch.com/

AMR does not cover online art sales.

Alison Becker at LTB Gordon's Art kindly sent me some additional
information.

Gordon's Photography and Print Annuals include "a few online sales." The
online databases, as opposed to the CD-Roms are updated throughout the
year, so may be best for your needs.

Please contact Gordon's directly to discuss their products. Here's their
