  • there are 12 domains for which persuasive techs have potential. 4 top are: marketing, health, saftey,  enviro conservation
    • Most of these latter 3 address non-controversial topics
    • Marketing is the most widely used. Promotes buying of services/products & brandbuilding. Generally Web sites that use strategies that are variations on a theme of tactics that work in real life.
  • most existing PTs address teens and pretees
  • Three general categories
    • desktop: most common. desk-bound. = limited
    • artifacts: portable.
    • environment based: built into rooms or spaces
  • Strategies
    • positive feedback: compliments
    • role playing: acting out scenarios with others helps behavioral change - facilitated by virtual worlds
    • simulating experiences: allows people to draw their own conclusions and adopt appropriate behaviors
    • monitoring or tracking activities
    • creating environment of discover: fantasy, control, positive feedback
    • motivating virtual groups: competition, recognition
    • tailoring informaiton
