Delivering value to artists online
While delivering a great art experience for browsers and buyers, it's also critical to offer each participating artist a ROI. Even if there is no network benefit (ie: traffic), the service should deliver value. It could achieve this objective in a few ways:
1) easy tools for building a great looking online presence with all technical options thought out such as clean URLs and SEO
2) turnkey web advertising and promotion options - such as an automatic google ad buy, flyer distribution (would help to be somehow connected with networks of on the ground promotion avenues), or PR release online that gets properly SEOed and submitted to relevant places
3) online storefront for selling work - no hassle credit card processing - artist just gets a check
3.5) easy method for selling objects from digital images (posters, etc)
4) reporting and traffic analysis tools - which tie back into reporting and advertising
5) aggregates work they've done in other areas of the web
In sum, giving the artist the benefit of a top-class web consultant plus real promotional value.
Some problems:
* it will cost a lot to offer real promotional value
* the tools will have to be dead simple. a complex UI creates too high of a barrier to entry
* while it may offer great tools for building an online portfolio, they will necessarily be too general for artists who will want a unique website. possible solution is to offer a common look and feel that is distinctly this site, rather than their site, but works well enough that it doesn't matter.
To Research:
* existing tools for artists to build web presence
* avenues for online promotion (plus opportunities for offline promotion such as newspaper buys or on the ground flyer distribution or robo-phone banking (just thought of this idea: artist leaves a message promoting their show and then enters the phone numbers of their friends. robo gives them all a call to promote the online show(or an offline event). at end of call, friend is asked to press 1 if he or she wants future calls from related artists in the area. if so, they are flagged and will then be of use to future artists. uses network effect to build a call list. has to be extremely valuable and relevant call each time))
* aggregation approach: what could be aggregated? existing flickr photos and the like? what else?
* create product from digital print - how do these services work? do they have turnkey apis and dropshipping systems that one can easily plug into?
